North East Cargo Link (NECL) is a project aiming at promoting and marketing new, speedy and safe intermodal transport soluteions across Mid Scandinavia with connections from East and west. NECL also aims to become and interesting alternative to avoid the transport congestion on the continent onand in Southern parts of Scandinavia. The project has recently applied for Interreg III B funding and has already received objective one funding. The project is conducted in close co-operation between public authories and private enterprises. NECL intends to create a scheduled transport flow giving speedier transit times, and thus cost benefits, compared with today?s transport pattern. This has a special significant value for capital intesive goods and consumables. NECL has a good environmental impact. For example classified and dangerous goods can be shipped with freight ferry across the Sea of Bothnia instead of going on the road around the Bay of Botnia. NECL has launched a co-operation project with partners operating regular liner traffic between ports in the middle of Norway and the Tyne area in North Eastern England. NECL is also working at creating a portal for freight and business on the internet in order to facilitate ordering of transport service, co-ordinating transport, promoting trade in the Mid Nordic area and guiding business to emerging and interesting markets in Russia and Europe.
